New Dermapen® Microneedling Device for Acne Scars, Stretch Marks, and Skin Tightening By Shareef Jandali M.D. on March 23, 2013

Dermapen® Microneedling in Connecticut

Jandali Plastic Surgery starting using the Dermapen® this week.  The device works by causing hundreds of small vertical micro-punctures in the skin which stimulate the body's own natural healing abilities.  This causes fibroblast proliferation and collagen and elastin formation.  This in turn leads to smoother and tighter skin within weeks after treatment.

Microneedling for Acne Scars

At our Connecticut plastic surgery practice, we have seen our best results for treatment of acne scars with Dermapen microneedling.  The indented scars that result from healed acne are notoriously difficult to treat.  Acne can be treated superficially with chemical peels or microdermabrasion, but ideally, a deeper treatment is going to give a better longer-lasting result.  With microneedling, all of the microscopic injuries to the scarred areas cause collagen formation, which cause the scars to become less indented.  As they become more shallow, they cause less shadowing and become less visible.  Usually 3-5 Dermapen microneedling treatments are used to treat acne scars, depending on how severe the scarring is.

Microneedling for Skin Tightening

Dermapen microneedling is also used to treat mildly loose skin by causing skin tightening.  The skin feels instantly tighter after treatment.  However, the full results are not seen for 6-8 weeks after your first treatment.  This is the length of time that is takes for the body to fully heal and remodel all the tiny punctures in the skin.  The skin will have a better overall tone with a series of microneedling treatment at Jandali Plastic Surgery.

Microneedling for Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are treated at our Connecticut office with microneedling.  Stretch marks form on areas of the body where the skin was stretched quicker than it could keep up with new collagen and elastin deposition.  The skin just feels and looks thin in these areas.  Microneedling causes thickening and tightening of the stretch mark skin as it heals and deposits collagen and elastin.  A series of microneedling treatments cause the stretch marks to fade and become less noticeable.

Microneedling Compared to Laser

Because there is no heat generated with Dermpen® microneedling, unlike fractional laser therapy, there is no thermal damage to the surrounding skin around each micropuncture.  This leads to less swelling, less redness, and a quicker recovery.  The procedure is performed in the office after topical numbing cream has been applied.  The procedure takes about 20-30 minutes to perform, depending on the size of the area to be treated.  The best results are seen after a series of at least 3 treatments.
