A woman's breasts can change over time, losing their youthful perky shape and firmness. Multiple factors can cause the breast to sag, including gravity, aging, weight loss, and pregnancy/breastfeeding. These factors can lead to the nipple and areola being lower than the breast crease or even pointing downward. A mastopexy is an operation used to raise and firm the breasts, restoring their youthful appearance. Sometimes, the nipple/areola can become enlarged over time and a breast lift will reduce this as well.
Breast Lift Scars
There are a variety of breast lift techniques used at our Fairfield County practice to restore shape, size, and firmness. These include:
- Crescent mastopexy, which is used to correct minimal sagging or asymmetric nipple height/position, and results in a small scar on the top half of the nipple.
- Periareolar mastopexy, which is also used to correct minimal sagging, and results in a small circular scar around the areola.
- Vertical mastopexy, which is used for moderate sagging, and leaves a lollipop-shaped scar around the areola and a straight line down to the breast crease.
- Wise-pattern mastopexy, which is used for significant sagging, and leaves an anchor-shaped (or inverted-T) scar on the bottom of the breast.
Breast Lift with Implants
Breast lift surgery can correct sagging of the breasts, but will not change the size of the breasts or give excessive fullness to the top part of the breast. For this reason, a mastopexy is often combined with breast augmentation to restore volume and give a fuller look. A silicone or saline implant can be used for the augmentation, which is performed through the same scars as the breast lift. The recovery is the same as a breast lift and is still performed as an outpatient procedure.

Breast Lift without Implants
Breast lift surgery is performed without implants when a woman desires a natural lifted appearance to her breasts without them being any larger. The nipple position often is low and points downward before surgery. After surgery, the nipple position is higher and points forward instead of downward. This procedure is slightly shorter than a breast lift with an augmentation.
Breast Lift with Fat Transfer
For women who desire a breast lift with fullness of the upper breast, but do not desire an implant, a natural augmentation can be performed with fat transfer without any implant. Fat is liposuctioned from the abdomen, flanks, hips, or thighs, and is then processed for re-injection into the breast. This process, called fat grafting or fat transfer, is performed to the top part of the breasts in order to give fullness to the cleavage area.
