What are the Scars after Breast Reduction?

Dr. Jandali does everything he can to make the smallest scars that are thin and flat. Much of the bad scarring that occurs with breast reduction surgery is due to too much tension on the skin when it is sutured together. Dr. Jandali limits the use of the traditional Wise-pattern or inverted-T breast reduction for only very large reductions. The majority of breast reductions performed are with the circumvertical pattern ("lollipop" incision around the areola and down to the breast crease). This means that there is no scar in the breast fold on the bottom of the breast – this is often the scar that becomes hypertrophic and thickened.
Breast Reduction Scar Cream
We recommend that all breast reduction patients use SkinMedica Scar Recovery Gel. This scar cream contains the only two ingredients that have been proven to improve scarring: silicone and centella asiatica. It is applied twice a day starting about 2-3 weeks after surgery once all the incisions have healed.
Breast Reduction Scar Massage
We also recommend that patients perform scar massage when they apply their scar cream. Scar massage has been shown in studies to make scars softer and flatter. The pressure from massage causes the collagen in scars to remodel faster, leaving the best scars possible.
Breast Reduction Without Scars
Dr. Jandali also performs scarless breast reduction using liposuction alone in certain patients that are ideal candidates. These patients are usually younger patients with good elastic skin that can shrink backwards after some of the underlying fat is removed with liposuction.
