Breast Deformity with Poland Syndrome

Poland Syndrome has a highly variable presentation, meaning that one case can look almost completely different from another case. The defining characteristic is that part of the pectoralis muscle underneath the breast is not developed. However, the entire pectoralis muscle may also be missing. The overlying breast may be small or absent. The nipple and areola can be missing or asymmetric in size or position (usually higher on the chest). There are other more severe findings, such as defects of the chest wall or the arm/hand. There are different treatments to correct the breast in Poland Syndrome and they depend on the deformity that is present. They range from custom implants for contouring a chest wall defect, to flaps from the back, to breast tissue expanders and implants. Fat grafting can also be used to take fat from one area of the body, like the thigh or abdomen, and inject it to fill in depressions on the chest or around the breast.
