Tuberous or Tubular Breast Deformity

Tuberous breasts are caused by a congenital fascial band that constricts the lower half of one or both breasts. This causes the bottom half of the breast to be short, elevated, and constricted. Since the breast tissue cannot fill the lower half of the breast, the top part of the breast tends to hang over the lower breast. In addition, breast tissue tends to bulge out of the areola, which causes it to stretch out and become enlarged. The breast can be hypoplastic (smaller than normal) to varying degrees. In addition, one or both sides can be affected and they can be affected to different degrees. The psychological impacts of this disorder can be severe.

Surgery for Tuberous Breasts in Connecticut

The appropriate treatment depends on the severity of the malformation. If there is only mild constriction of the lower half of the breast, a breast augmentation can be performed with release of the tight fascial band. This allows the breast tissue to spread out over the implant in a normal fashion. The incision for the breast augmentation is made around the areola, so that this can be reduced in size as well. For more severe cases, where there is very tight skin in the bottom half of the breast, the skin must first be expanded with a tissue expander in order to be able to fit an implant. When there is adequate tissue to be able to fit an implant, the tissue expander is removed and the final implant is placed.
