DIEP Flap Breast Reconstruction: Case 4 This is a 47 year old female with a previous history of left breast cancer, for which she underwent breast conservation (lumpectomy and radiation therapy). She had a significant left breast deformity from the lumpectomy and radiation and the entire left breast was smaller, contracted, and had the nipple pulled outward.
She developed a recurrence in the left breast and therefore underwent double mastectomies. Due to the previous radiation and the already distorted left breast, DIEP flap breast reconstruction was her best option. The skin from her abdomen was used on the left breast in order to replace the lack of skin on the bottom of the breast.
