DIEP Flap Breast Reconstruction: Case 6 This is a 46 year old female diagnosed with left breast cancer. She elected to undergo bilateral mastectomies, but her left nipple and areola needed to be removed. She first underwent bilateral breast reconstruction with tissue expanders. She needed a completion left axillary dissection after the mastectomy, which was complicated by left arm lymphedema and a chronic infection in her left underarm area. Due to the risk of infection of an implant, she decided to switch the tissue expanders to DIEP flaps instead of implants.
