Breast reduction surgery is often performed not only for cosmetic reasons, but also to relieve neck and back pain. Excessively large breasts can affect one’s daily activities, making it especially difficult to exercise. After a breast reduction, many women lose weight because they can now perform aerobic and cardio exercises without breast discomfort.
A breast reduction procedure usually removes excess skin and breast tissue, but can be performed with either of two incisions, the vertical incision (lollipop-shaped) or the Wise pattern incision (anchor-shaped). With both methods, the size of the areolas is reduced since they are usually stretched and enlarged in women with large breasts. In addition, both techniques lift the breasts and position the nipples further up on the breast and pointing forward instead of downward.
Scarless breast reduction can be performed in some individuals that need a mild to moderate reduction in the size of their breasts and don’t have sagging breasts. This is performed with liposuction only and therefore this scarless breast reduction does not remove any skin from the breast. The skin must have good tone and elasticity without any stretch marks before surgery in order to be a candidate.
Liposuction can be added to any breast reduction to remove excess fat from the outsides of the breasts and the armpit regions. This gives the breasts an even better contour after surgery since they are not being overwhelmed by the extra fat along the sides.
Whichever technique is used, and whatever the amount of breast tissue removed, studies show that breast reduction surgery has a very high satisfaction rate. The scars usually fade nicely with time and are always on the bottom of the breast. There is better balance between breast size and the rest of the body and self-confidence is restored.
