Allergan, Inc., the company that produces Botox, Juvederm, and Latisse, recently announced that the company has received FDA approval for JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ XC. Juvederm Voluma is the first and only filler approved to temporarily correct volume loss in the cheek area due to aging. Aging and the effects of gravity cause the cheeks to flatten out and droop over time.
Juvederm Voluma injections last up to 2 years and help create fuller, more youthful cheeks and cheekbone area. Juvederm Voluma is made from hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring protein found in the human body. Hyaluronic acid absorbs water and this hydration is what gives volume to the area in which it is injected. In the clinical trial, both patients and physicians saw an instant filling of the cheek area, which also indirectly lifts the nasolabial fold area.
Juvederm Voluma has been used in Europe since 2005 with great success. Allergan’s manufacturing process allows the hyaluronic acid gel to flow smoothly, making injections as comfortable as possible. In addition, the injections contain a small amount of lidocaine, which helps to numb the treatment area during the injection procedure.
The most common side effects observed in the clinical trial included temporary injection-site tenderness, swelling, firmness, lumps/bumps, bruising, pain, redness, discoloration, and itching. They were predominantly moderate (uncomfortable) in severity, with a duration of two to four weeks. You can return to normal activities and exercise 24 hours after injection.
JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ XC is now available at Jandali Plastic Surgery. Dr. Jandali uses a painless injection technique combining topical numbing medicine and an ice pack before injection.
