Patient of the Month – IPL for Facial Hyperpigmentation and Brown Spot Removal By Shareef Jandali M.D. on March 09, 2014

Sun Spot Treatment in Connecticut

The patient is a 45 year old female with a history of sun exposure, whose chief complaint was small areas of scattered pigmentation on the face.  These spots appeared benign on exam and are classic sun spots, or brown spots.  If there are a few discrete age spots, they are best treated with IPL (intense pulsed light) treatments.  These treatments were performed 3 times by our nurse skin care specialist, who is certified to use the Syneron laser.  The areas usually turn darker in color immediately after treatment and then they crust and fall off within a few days.  These treatments are best performed on skin that has no tan, so that the surrounding skin has very little pigment, allowing the brown spot to soak up more of the laser energy.  After treatment, it is important to avoid sunlight and wear SPF.  These treatments work best when combined with SkinMedica Lytera Skin Brightening Complex, which has been shown to reduce the appearance of skin discolorations and dark spots in as early as 6 weeks of application.
