As men and women age, they strive to look younger in the face and will often undergo facelifts, eyelid surgery, and use various facial fillers and Botox to maintain a youthful appearance. However, their hands often tell their true age. The typical aging signs on the hands include: dark hyperpigmented brown spots, large visible veins, and thin wrinkled skin. Why not rejuvenate the hands like we rejuvenate the face? There are now very good lasting ways to rejuvenate the hands.
The first step in hand rejuvenation is to remove or reduce the appearance of hyperpigmented skin spots, also known as brown spots, age spots, or sun spots. These are visible from afar and can be quite dark. IPL (intense pulsed light) treats these spots in a series of treatments by specifically targeting the dark color. It also improves the texture of the skin over time by stimulating collagen growth.
The second step in rejuvenation of the backs of the hands is to use a filler to volumize the thin skin. This will help hide some of the prominent veins and tendons which are seen. It will also fill out the skin so that the fine lines and wrinkles are less apparent. Injectable off-the-shelf fillers like Juvederm or Radiesse can be used and last about 1 year.
A permanent way to volumize the hands is to perform fat transfer (fat grafting), where fat is liposuctioned from elsewhere on the body and then processed and re-injected into the backs of the hands. This is a small surgical procedure performed through one small incision on the back of the hand near the wrist. There is slightly more swelling and longer recovery with using one’s own fat compared to Juvederm or Radiesse. However, about 50-70% of the transferred fat survives and is permanent, so serial injections every year are not needed.
