Most people do not love their love handles. Love handles are the excess fat and skin that is in the flank region and hangs over one’s pants. They are also sometimes referred to as “muffin top”. Some areas on the body are stubborn and resistant to diet and exercise and the love handles are notoriously tough to get rid of. This is often due to genetics, with diet and exercise helping only minimally. With the fashion trend of tight form-fitting pants and dresses, this area is often a concern for women. For men, this is also a tough area, even after performing a hundred crunches and sit-ups a day.
The two best plastic surgical treatments for love handles are liposuction and CoolSculpting®. Liposuction is surgical and CoolSculpting is non-surgical.
Liposuction is perfect for the patient that desires a dramatic improvement in contour. Liposuction is often combined with a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) or liposuction of other areas of the body like the thighs. It requires anesthesia and is done in the operating room. There is minimal pain post-operatively and the patient is instructed to wear a compression garment for about a month. The final results are usually seen by about two months after all the swelling has subsided.
CoolSculpting® is a new FDA-approved non-surgical treatment to permanently reduce fat. It is completely non-invasive and no anesthesia, needles, or sedation are used. It is performed in the comfort of our office while you read magazines or watch movies on our iPad. The average number of treatments for each side is two, with all four treatments being performed in one four-hour session. There is minimal discomfort afterwards with no need for pain medication other than Tylenol or Advil. The fat is frozen away and the body naturally breaks it down. No compression garment is needed after the treatment and normal activities and exercise can be resumed the same day. Results can first be seen at about 1 month after treatment, and the final result is seen at 2-3 months after the treatment. Since CoolSculpting requires no trip to the operating room and no anesthesia, the cost for treating the love handles is usually about half the cost of liposuction of the same area.
