Saddle bags are defined as the bulging areas on the outer thighs. This is usually caused by a genetic predisposition to accumulate fat in this area. It concerns women because there is no good way to hide or camouflage this area. The bulges are often seen through jeans or workout pants. The fat in these areas is very resistant to diet and exercise and even the slightest weight gain causes them to reappear.
Saddlebags are best treated with either liposuction or CoolSculpting®. Liposuction is a surgical procedure, while CoolSculpting is completely non-invasive.
Liposuction of saddle bags is performed in the operating room under anesthesia. It is a short procedure, but is often combined with liposuction of other areas of the body or another cosmetic procedure like a breast augmentation or an abdominoplasty. The area is usually swollen for a few weeks after liposuction and the final result is seen by 2 months.
CoolSculpting® of the thighs was just recently FDA approved. CoolSculpting is a completely non-surgical and non-invasive procedure that is performed in the office. There is no anesthesia, no needles, no sedation, and no time needed off from work. CoolSculpting freezes the fat away permanently in the area it is performed. The procedure takes 2 hours to perform on each leg (4 hours total) to treat the saddle bag area. After treatment, it is not unusual to have mild discomfort and some swelling or bruising. Patients can resume work, exercise, and normal activities right after treatment. Results are first seen about 1 month after treatment, and final results are seen by 3 months.
