Why Do Stretch Marks Form?
Stretch marks can occur in both men and women. These usually form on areas of the body where the skin has grown or has been stretched too quickly. The most common area where stretch marks occur is on a woman’s abdomen during pregnancy. They can also occur with rapid or extreme weight gain or weight loss.
Stretch marks are common on several areas of the body, including the abdomen, flanks, thighs, hips, breasts, upper arms, lower back, and buttock. The stretch marks occur in the dermis, which is the elastic middle layer of skin that is full of collagen. These marks often start off looking reddish, pinkish, or purplish. They then become lighter, glossy, and silvery with time. Still, the skin looks and feels thin in the areas where the stretch marks are present. Once these “scars” are present, they are permanent.
How to Get Rid of Stretch Marks
Different techniques, such as the Dermapen microneedling, can lighten stretch marks and cause them to fade and blend in better. The degree of success with any treatment will depend on age, skin tone, how aggressive the treatments are, and how many treatments are performed. Surgical removal of stretch marks is another option that will completely and permanently remove stretch marks.
Microneedling for Stretch Marks in Connecticut
Dermapen® is an advanced microneedling device that is used to stimulate collagen formation. The device contains 11 stainless steel needles that rapidly penetrate the skin causing micro-injuries. This stimulates the body’s own natural healing abilities by releasing growth factors and causing fibroblasts to multiply. These fibroblasts deposit collagen and elastin and cause the skin to remodel with time. This process has been shown to thicken the dermis with time, especially in thin stretch mark skin.
Dermapen® treatments are performed in the office after numbing cream is applied to the skin. After the treatment, the skin is finished with SkinMedica TNS Ceramide Treatment Cream, which contains growth factors that penetrate the skin through all the micro-channels that were formed. There is minimal downtime and the skin will immediately feel and look tighter after the treatment. The full effect of each treatment will be seen about 6-8 weeks after the treatment. A series of 3-4 treatments is recommended for the best improvement in stretch marks. The before and after photos above are courtesy of Dermapen®.
Tummy Tuck for Abdominal Stretch Marks
The tummy tuck and mini-tummy tuck permanently remove stretch marks from the lower abdomen. The tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) removes all the skin and stretch marks from the belly button down to the pubic area. The skin from the upper abdomen is pulled down to close the gap, which flattens and tightens the entire abdomen.
The mini tummy tuck uses a smaller scar just above the pubic area (in the area of a C-section scar) to remove any excess skin and stretch marks just above the pubic area. Any stretch marks that are above the belly button cannot be removed by a tummy tuck and are permanent. However, they can be treated with the Dermapen® micro-needling device.
Breast Surgery for Stretch Marks
A breast lift can remove stretch marks that are close to the areola and on the bottom part of the breast. It also lifts the nipples and makes the breasts looks more youthful and supported.
A breast reduction decreases the size of the breast in addition to lifting the breast. Skin and tissue are removed and if the stretch marks are within the reduction markings, they are permanently removed as well.
